Black Clay

Wendy Thoreson
Wendy received her bachelor’s degree in history and minor in art from Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, North Carolina. In college she worked as a studio technician, traveled abroad to La Meridiana International School of Ceramics in Tuscany, and learned much about traditional North Carolina ceramics by visiting local potters.
Originally from Minnesota, she has volunteered at Northern Clay Center, taught kids summer camps, and was studio assistant to Colleen Riley at Eureka Pottery. Summer 2013 she assisted Bonnie Seeman at Haystack School of Mountain Crafts, and Leah Leitson and Susan Filley at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts.
During her time at the Ceramic Center, she further developed her cone 1, slip decorated functional earthenware. Wendy tries to incorporate her interest in the past by balancing elegant Victorian forms with worn, imperfect surfaces.
When not in the studio, she can most likely be found drinking local beer and hunting antique stores for inspiration.
Wendy currently teaches the Handbuilding/Wheel Throwing Combo Class at the AMOCA Ceramics Studio.
