This catalogue makes two claims to the status of “first”. The first publication to offer a comprehensive record of the life and art of James Hueter, it also documents the first retrospective exhibition devoted to this extraordinary artist in Claremont, which had been his home since 1942. Both exhibition and publication trace the trajectory of Hueter’s work from early experiments with realism and surrealism, to a highly personal minimalism; through the development of a personal color vocabulary, to experiments with expressionism; and culminating in late works that deftly blend these many strands into a formal and conceptual style that is at once complex and accessible.
